Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau
The world is nothing but sand and sea. Floating through it is the Mud Whale, an island that carries an entire civilization within its belly. Most of its people are "Marked"—cursed with supernatural powers that come with a guaranteed early death. Chakuro works as the village archivist, spending his days recording whatever new islands wash up on the horizon. Spoiler: they're always empty, just ruins of civilizations long dead. When a new island appears after six months of nothing, Chakuro jumps at the chance to explore it with his friends. They dig through the wreckage of some ancient place, and that's where Chakuro finds her—a girl hidden in the rubble who's about to flip his entire world upside down.
