The Holy Grail is an ancient relic with the power to grant any wish. To claim it, magi called "masters" summon legendary Heroic Spirits—"servants"—to battle each other in a brutal tournament called the Holy Grail War. Only the final master-servant pair standing wins the prize. The third war, though, ended without a winner when the Grail vanished under mysterious circumstances. Years pass. Then the magi clan Yggdmillennia reveals they have the Grail and plan to leave the Mage's Association. The Association doesn't take this well. They send 50 of their best magi to take it back, but an unknown servant wipes out all but one. That survivor becomes a messenger, delivering Yggdmillennia's declaration of war. With only two sides fighting, the Holy Grail War becomes something different than before. Yggdmillennia and the Mage's Association each field seven master-servant pairs, and whichever side loses all their fighters first loses the Grail. As the 14 masters summon their servants and the battlefield fills with power, the magical world braces for what comes next—the Great Holy Grail War.
