Blue Period
Second-year high school student Yatora Yaguchi has it all figured out—or at least, that's what his grades suggest. He's a delinquent who somehow maintains excellent marks and spends his time with equally unmotivated friends, coasting through life without any real sense of purpose. Deep down, though, he's bored with the whole thing and desperately wants something that actually matters. Everything changes when Yatora gets stuck staring at a vivid landscape of Shibuya. The view hits him in a way he can't quite explain, so he grabs a paintbrush and tries to get it down on canvas. The positive feedback he gets back hits different—it's the first time he's felt genuinely excited about something. That spark launches him toward an audacious goal: getting into Tokyo University of the Arts, one of Japan's most cutthroat art schools that only takes about one in two hundred applicants. Now Yatora's up against serious competition. He's got almost no formal training, his parents don't really support the idea, and he's surrounded by people who've been doing this their whole lives. To snag one of just five spots in his desired program, he'll need to prove that being a complete beginner doesn't mean he's not worthy.
