A man fresh out of prison heads straight for the one thing that kept him going: a master storyteller named Yakumo. After hearing Yakumo perform a traditional comic narrative called "Shinigami," he's hooked. He begs to become Yakumo's apprentice, and against all expectations, Yakumo agrees—giving his new student the name Yotaro. As Yotaro settles into his apprenticeship, he gets to know the people around Yakumo, especially Konatsu, Yakumo's ward. Konatsu is the daughter of a famous storyteller who died tragically, and Yakumo took her in. She inherited her father's love of storytelling and dreams of performing professionally, but women aren't really given that opportunity in this world. This story was bundled with special editions of volumes 7 and 8 of the manga.
