Hanamichi Sakuragi is a notorious delinquent—tall, temperamental, and impossible to miss with his bright red hair. Starting at Shohoku High, he's got two goals: get a girlfriend and finally break his embarrassing streak of 50 rejections from middle school. Unfortunately, his reputation already follows him, and most students keep their distance. Everything changes when Haruko Akagi, completely unaware of who he is, casually asks if he likes basketball. Hanamichi instantly falls for her and blurts out an enthusiastic yes without thinking twice. She drags him to the gym and asks if he can dunk. Desperate to impress her, he goes for it—and ends up face-planting the scoreboard instead. But Haruko notices something: this guy's got serious athleticism. She mentions it to the basketball team's captain, and from there, Hanamichi gradually gets pulled into the team.
