The Abyssal Fleet's alien forces keep hunting humanity, and the Kanmusu—girls who embody the spirits of Japanese warships—are all that stands between them and extinction. As the fighting drags on, these girls are pushed to the brink. The Mutsuki-class destroyer Kisaragi falls in battle like so many others. Then, after a successful night raid, the Eighth Fleet finds her. Kisaragi's floating on the surface, alive but unconscious. Except something's off. Her behavior is weird, and the other Kanmusu don't trust what they're seeing. Things get stranger when mysterious voices start echoing through the fleet and crimson waters begin corrupting their ships. Fubuki, the lead Fubuki-class destroyer, is the only one who seems immune to it all. As Fubuki and her crew investigate what's happening, the darker truths about their world and the Abyssal threat start to surface. But they can't afford to look back now. They have to keep moving forward—to save the sea and protect the people they care about.
