Serial murders have been happening in Inaba, and the police are pretty much stumped. Yuu Narukami gets sent to the small town to stay with his uncle for a year while his parents work overseas. He ends up at Yasogami High School, where he quickly befriends Yousuke, Chie, and Yukiko. One day the group tells him about the "Midnight Channel," some urban legend about a mysterious TV broadcast that shows up at midnight on rainy nights—but only if you're watching alone. Yuu decides to check it out that night and ends up seeing the next murder victim on screen. Weirdly, he gets pulled into the TV itself, and his friends are curious enough about what happened that they want to dig deeper. It turns out there's an entire world inside the TV, thick with fog and packed with hostile creatures called Shadows. Once Yuu realizes this place is connected to the murders, he and his friends form the Investigation Team to figure out what's really going on.
