People are randomly bursting into flame and transforming into violent monsters called Infernals. To fight back, the government and the Holy Church of Sol created the Special Fire Force. Some humans—third-generation pyrokinetics—can control fire without losing their humanity, and they make up the force's ranks. Shinra Kusakabe is one of these pyrokinetics, capable of igniting his feet to launch himself through the air. He joins Special Fire Force Company 8 with big dreams of becoming a hero and saving people from the Infernal threat. He's got the drive and the ability, but the job turns out to be way messier than he expected. The Fire Force itself is dysfunctional, with different brigades constantly at odds. Meanwhile, Infernal sightings are spiking across Tokyo, and a mysterious group keeps popping up claiming they know something about the fire that killed Shinra's family a dozen years ago. Caught between internal politics and external threats, Shinra has to dig through layers of mystery to figure out what's really going on behind all the flames.
