Kei Narutani and his childhood friend Song Minghua are Chinese refugees running from the Zai, a mysterious organization that's been terrorizing their country. During their escape to Japan, they're rescued by a strange red aircraft—and Kei becomes obsessed with finding out what it is. Turns out his savior is a girl named Gripen, an "Anima" who pilots a unique fighter jet called a "Daughter." Gripen is a JAS-39F, and despite being adorable, she's got some serious issues with flying. Kei bonds with her pretty quickly, and the Japan Self-Defense Force recruits him to help her work through her problems. Soon they're joined by Eagle, a laid-back F-15J pilot, and Phantom, a proud RF-4EJ flyer. Together with Kei and Minghua, they become humanity's last defense against the Zai, fighting to keep the alien threat from destroying everything.
