A gate to another world suddenly opened in Mikado City, bringing with it creatures called Neighbors—hostile beings that can't be hurt by normal weapons. To deal with them, the Border Defense Agency was created, equipped with special weapons called Triggers. Years have passed since the initial invasion, but Neighbors still show up regularly, keeping Border operatives constantly vigilant. Trainee members like Osamu Mikumo aren't allowed to use their Triggers except at headquarters, which puts him in a bind when bullies drag a new student into a forbidden area and Neighbors attack. He jumps in anyway, figuring it's the right call—only to watch the transfer student, Yuuma Kuga, demolish the creatures single-handedly. It turns out Yuuma isn't human at all. He's actually a Neighbor masquerading as a regular student.
