Kanda Yuu is one of the main characters in D.Gray-man and a key member of the Black Order. He's a young Japanese man with long dark blue hair (black in the manga) and striking dark eyes. Fans often note that he takes his appearance seriously—Lavi's dubbed him a "pretty-type character," and Allen's given him the dubious honor of "feminine face." His hair definitely gets the soap treatment.
Personality-wise, Kanda's not winning any friendliness awards. He's cold, arrogant, and stoic even around his fellow exorcists. In combat he'll do whatever it takes to win, consequences be damned—he's made casual jokes about leaving teammates to their deaths. He genuinely doesn't see exorcists as saviors.
Despite going by "Yuu," he hates being called by his given name and rarely introduces himself that way. He's got a running thing with Allen, calling him "bean sprout," and while Kanda claims not to care about the Finders, it's pretty clear he does. Same goes for his teammates—his "it's none of my business" act doesn't fool anyone. He and Allen are constantly bickering, barely agreeing on anything.
Food-wise, he's a soba devotee and loves tempura. His dislikes are famously extensive (he says there are too many to list), but he's vocal about hating naive people, liars, cursed individuals, loudmouths, anyone using his first name, and anything sweet.
His weapon is Mugen, a sword-type Innocence. He activates it by running two fingers down the blade's spine while calling out its name, transforming it into a silver blade. The sword's form has evolved throughout his life—it started as a small winged butcher's knife in childhood, became a straight Japanese sword early in the series, and eventually was reforged into a traditional katana after his fight with Skin Boric.
