Goombas—sometimes called Little Goombas—are one of the Mushroom World's most iconic enemy types and have been giving Mario and Luigi trouble since the original Super Mario Bros. These small, brown mushroom-like creatures belong to the same fungus-based family as Toads, Amanitas, Spooks, and Shroobs.
What they lack in strength, they make up for in persistence. A single stomp is usually enough to take one down, which is why they're not particularly dangerous on their own. That said, tougher variants have popped up over the years that pose a real threat. The real problem with Goombas isn't individual power—it's sheer numbers.
Historically, Goombas maintained decent relations with the Mushroom Kingdom, but things got complicated. Most of them defected to join Bowser's Koopa Troop, becoming some of his most reliable foot soldiers. Not all Goombas went that route, though. Some turned to independent banditry, while others established their own peaceful settlements, staying out of the larger conflicts altogether.
