Daiba serves as the viewer's entry point into Harlock's universe. At 14, he's essentially the audience surrogate—the character we follow as he discovers this strange new world. His backstory is pretty heavy: his father was a scientist killed by the Mazone, and his mother died in a disaster on Triton (one of Neptune's moons) after the government callously ignored her desperate pleas for help. These losses drive him to join the Arcadia's crew.
Early on, Daiba and Harlock butt heads more than once, which adds some natural friction to their relationship. But as the series goes on, he proves himself and gradually earns his place among Harlock's trusted inner circle. By the end, he's become a solid member of the senior staff.
