Mito is Gon's adoptive mother and cousin to Ging Freecss—though earlier versions of the story made her Gon's aunt instead, sister to his biological mother. She raised Gon after his mother died shortly after giving birth, and she's spent years dealing with the aftermath of Ging abandoning them both. Watching her sister pine for a husband who never came home left a deep mark on Mito, which is why she fought so hard to keep Gon from becoming a Hunter and following the same path his father did. Once Gon made up his mind and left anyway, though, she shifted gears and became his biggest supporter.
Mito's a good person—the kind who judges people by their actions rather than labels. She accepted Killua into Gon's life without much hesitation despite learning he came from an assassin family. When the two boys found an injured animal in the forest, Killua casually suggested putting it down to end its suffering, and Mito didn't hesitate to slap him for it. The moment stuck with her enough that it pushed Gon and Killua to figure out how to heal the animal using nen instead. She genuinely believes people should do everything in their power to save a life.
