Calgara was a Shandian hero from about 400 years ago, back when Upper Yard was still connected to Jaya. He's best known for his unlikely friendship with the explorer Montblanc Norland—an ancestor of Montblanc Cricket—and for being the direct ancestor of Wiper. After his death, the Shandians erected a statue in his honor as a lasting symbol of his strength and courage.
In his early life, Calgara was fiercely traditional and deeply suspicious of outsiders. He took the customs of his people seriously and didn't warm to strangers easily. Meeting Norland changed him fundamentally. His worldview shifted, and he began to see things differently—especially after discovering that what the Shandians had revered as their God was actually just a giant snake. That revelation made him dismiss the concept of gods altogether, including the Skypieans' so-called deity.
Calgara had a daughter named Musse, and his legacy endured through his descendants for generations.
