Ohana Matsumae is the story's protagonist—a bright, energetic 16-year-old who gets shipped off to her grandmother's traditional inn, Kissuisou, when her mother runs away with a boyfriend to escape debt. The catch? She has to work at the inn to pay for room and board. Before leaving Tokyo, her best friend Kouichi Tanemura suddenly confesses his feelings and bolts before she can respond, leaving things awkward between them.
Ohana's got strong ideals and a stubborn sense of justice that constantly puts her at odds with the inn's staff—and especially her grandmother. She means well, constantly wanting to help people, but her efforts tend to blow up in her face or go completely unappreciated. Growing up with a neglectful parent forced her to be self-reliant from an early age; she learned not to depend on anyone. Working at Kissuisou slowly changes that, though. She starts to see how isolating it is to shoulder everything alone and begins opening up to the people around her.
At school, she shares classes with Minko, Nako, and Yuina.
