Hyuga Hinata is the eldest daughter of the Hyuga clan's main branch. Her name's a clever pun—"Hyuga" means "toward the sun," and "Hinata" means "a sunny place," using the same kanji in a different way. She was groomed by her father, Hiashi, to be the clan's heiress, but he eventually gave up on her after deciding she was weaker than her younger sister Hanabi. When Hinata joined Team 8, Hiashi essentially washed his hands of her, leaving her training entirely to her jonin instructor Kurenai Yuhi.
Early on, Hinata's biggest problem wasn't lack of skill—it was confidence. She'd train hard enough, but the moment actual competition showed up, she'd fold. Combined with her general reluctance to fight, this meant she couldn't complete missions and fell further behind. That changed gradually, mainly because of Naruto.
Hinata's had a crush on Naruto since their Academy days. What draws her to him is obvious: he's got everything she doesn't—confidence, strength, and determination. Her feelings for him actually push her to get stronger, both to impress him and to become more like him. She'll go completely out of character to help him out, and she's fiercely protective of him, sometimes defending him even against himself. When they reunite in Part II, she's so flustered she can barely greet him and literally passes out. But she slowly gets more comfortable around him after that, to the point where she can actually look him in the eye and work alongside him on missions without falling apart.
As a Hyuga, Hinata inherited the Byakugan—a visual ability that gives her nearly 360-degree sight. During the Chunin Exams, she learns to focus and extend her range even further. Her fighting style is Gentle Fist, a technique that lets her damage an opponent's chakra system and organs with minimal contact. She later develops her own signature move called Protection of the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, which combines the clan's strongest techniques into something new. It creates sharp chakra blades that shoot from her palms with incredible speed and precision, letting her attack and defend simultaneously across her entire field of vision.
