Yosaku is a pirate bounty hunter who works alongside Johnny. He's decent with a sword, though he rarely gets the chance to prove it—the enemies the crew faces after joining Luffy are just way out of his league. He and Johnny first cross paths with Luffy and the gang right after the Black Cat Pirates arc, when their little island takes a direct hit from the Going Merry's cannon during a test run. Once they're rescued and brought aboard, Yosaku gets treatment for his scurvy and the two of them stick around since their boat is basically destroyed. They end up traveling with the Straw Hats through the Don Krieg and Arlong Park arcs before deciding to stay behind at Cocoyashi Village to help rebuild.
It turns out Yosaku and Johnny both knew Zoro years before he ever joined the crew—the anime actually shows how they met in one of Zoro's dreams.
