Synopsis

Gold Roger's final words before his execution set the world ablaze with excitement. His declaration about his hidden treasure sparked a rush of would-be pirates to the seas—the Great Pirate Era had begun. Now a crew of young pirates is ready to make their mark. There's Monkey D. Luffy, a rubber man with big dreams. Roronoa Zoro, the "Pirate Hunter." Usopp, a sharpshooter. Sanji, the crew's cook. And Nami, the "Cat Burglar." The Straw Hats, as they're known, stand together on a barrel and pledge themselves to their next voyage. Luffy declares his goal without hesitation: "I'm gonna be King of the Pirates!" But the story really starts a decade earlier in Windmill Village, where a young Luffy was starstruck by a pirate captain named Red-Haired Shanks. When local bandits showed up to mock the pirates, Luffy got furious that Shanks wouldn't fight back. In that moment of frustration, Luffy ate a mysterious Devil Fruit he found—the Gum-Gum Fruit. His whole body turned to rubber, which was cool, but it came with a serious drawback: he could never swim again. Days later, those same bandits cornered Luffy again. Shanks and his crew stepped in and destroyed them. The bandit leader, Higuma, panicked and grabbed Luffy, dragging him toward the ocean. A massive Sea King attacked them, putting Luffy in mortal danger. Shanks saved him by staring down the creature, but lost his left arm in the process. When Shanks finally sailed away, he left Luffy with his straw hat. "Bring this back to me when you've become a great pirate," he said. Ten years later, Luffy's all grown up and ready to sail. He runs into that same Sea King and defeats it effortlessly with a Gum-Gum Pistol blast. His adventure to become King of the Pirates is officially underway.
