Ichigo looks like your average teenager—except for the spiky orange hair that's followed him around like a bad reputation. He's tall and lanky with a lean build, brown eyes, and peachy skin. Since becoming a Shinigami, he's gotten noticeably more muscular, something his sister Karin was quick to point out. When he's in his spiritual form, he wears standard Shinigami gear with an added strap across his chest.
His mom was his whole world growing up. He'd smile whenever he was around her, constantly at her side holding her hand. Her death left a permanent mark.
As a teenager, though, Ichigo's way more complicated. He's stubborn, hot-headed, impulsive, and doesn't back down from confrontation—but he tries to play it cool and detached, even though he claims not to care what people think. He's usually wearing a scowl. Balancing the real world and the spirit world (Soul Society) is a lot for any kid, and Ichigo's got his own issues piling on top of that. What catches people off-guard is how smart he actually is—he ranked 23rd in his entire high school. He uses academics partly as proof that being unique or looking like a punk doesn't mean he can't succeed.
When Ichigo first got his Zanpakutō, it was huge and awkward—an oversized katana with a massive brown sheathe slung over his right shoulder. The hand guard was rectangular bronze with a stylized flame pattern, the handle red with two light blue tassels. The whole thing was massive because he had tons of spiritual power he couldn't control yet. Problem was, that uncontrolled energy meant the actual sword was pretty weak—he wasn't channeling enough power into creating it. Still, it was enough to take down Gillian-class Menos and weaker Hollows, and could even block a Cero. One swing could tear up the ground.
But because the blade had such weak spiritual energy, Byakuya Kuchiki sliced most of it clean off the first time they fought. Then Kisuke Urahara destroyed it down to the hilt during training, forcing Ichigo to learn his Zanpakutō's true name to unlock its real form. It turns out the whole thing was basically powered by Rukia's depleted spiritual energy anyway, not his own.
