Deunan is an ESWAT specialist trained in weapons, explosives, hand-to-hand combat, and piloting Landmates—she's even ambidextrous according to official records. In the manga, Briareos was already a cyborg when she arrived at Olympus and lost an eye in a training accident. The 2004 film changes this: he only becomes a cyborg after a mission goes wrong and he's presumed dead.
In the movie, Deunan has spent nearly her whole life fighting in the Badlands, a war that's basically already over. She's the daughter of Carl and Dr. Gilliam Knute and is known as an exceptionally skilled fighter. Everything changes when an ESWAT team captures her in a ruined city and brings her to Olympus. There she reunites with Briareos, now her partner on the team—he's lost over 75% of his body to injuries and is mostly cybernetic. She also bonds with a girl named Hitomi.
The shock comes quickly: Deunan discovers that more than half of Olympus's population consists of artificial humans called Bioroids. Her new friend Hitomi is one of them. This revelation pulls her into a brewing conflict between human factions trying to eradicate the Bioroids entirely. When she's assigned to retrieve something called the Appleseed, Deunan uncovers secrets about her own past and a much larger conspiracy at work.
