Appleseed Alpha is set in an alternate timeline that ignores the events of previous Appleseed films, despite sharing the same director. Here, Briareos was already a cyborg from the start—there's no backstory about him being separated from Deunan and later reunited. The story follows Deunan and Briareos in the 22nd century as they navigate the ruins of New York, hunting for the legendary city of Olympus. A warlord named Two Horns hires them to take out some bipedal combat machines, but during the job they meet Iris and Olson, who are on their own mission. The two pairs hit it off and decide to work together. Turns out Iris has a serious problem: a rogue cyborg called Talos is after a secret weapon humanity had been developing. Things go wrong when Talos manages to use Iris to activate a massive war machine, putting everything at risk.
