Mitsuru is the only child of Takeharu Kirijo, who heads the Kirijo Group, and she's basically overqualified for high school—valedictorian and student council president. She fights with one-handed swords and specializes in ice magic, making her one of the party's heaviest hitters when it comes to offensive spellcasting.
She's been dealing with Shadows way longer than most of her peers. When she recognizes the Main Character's potential as a Persona-user, she and Ikutsuki bring him into SEES. Early on, Mitsuru works mainly behind the scenes, analyzing enemy patterns and giving tactical advice. Once Fuuka Yamagishi joins the group with her superior analysis abilities, Mitsuru finally gets to step into actual combat.
If you're interested in romancing her, fair warning: she's not easy. You'll need to max out your intellect stat and rank first in at least one exam—basically, you have to prove you're on her level intellectually. If you succeed, she actually opens up, and the relationship helps her break free from some of the pressure that comes with the Kirijo name.
She doesn't show up in the anime sequel Persona -trinity soul-, though fans have noted that a girl who looks strikingly similar to her appears briefly in the first episode.
