Skunk Kusai is one of Tezuka's creepier recurring characters. He first showed up in Astro Boy as a minor but memorable villain, then kept getting worse roles across Tezuka's work—popping up in Lion Books, Black Jack, and Rainbow Parakeet, among others. He's also had significant parts in animation, appearing in both Metropolis and Marine Express, plus the more recent Astro Boy: Omega Factor on Game Boy Advance.
Like Richard Widmark, the American actor he's based on, Kusai rarely anchors a series as the main character. Instead, he's the kind of supporting villain who sticks with you—sometimes even more than the actual main antagonist of whatever story he's in. Fans often note how memorable he is despite rarely being the lead.
