Maria Ross is a Second Lieutenant assigned to watch over the Elric brothers while they're in Central, paired with her partner Denny Brosh. The two were tasked with keeping Ed and Al safe after Scar showed up in the city—he'd already tried to kill them before, so security was serious. Ross basically fell into a motherly role pretty naturally. She genuinely cared about the brothers and tried to look out for them whenever she could, offering advice and guidance. She and Brosh both report to Major Alex Louis Armstrong.
What stands out about Ross is how far she was willing to go for the Elrics. When Ed started losing it while absorbing that red stone material in Laboratory 5, she rushed in to try and calm him down, fully aware she was putting herself in danger. It's a pretty telling moment—she'd clearly developed real affection for the brothers, especially Ed.
