She first showed up in Episode 21 when Gintoki walked into her shop looking to buy an electric fan. What should've been a simple transaction turned into a whole thing because of a language mix-up—the word for electric fan (扇風機, senpuuki) sounds identical to her father's counterfeit-money machine (銭封機, also senpuuki). Gintoki had no idea what he was actually asking about, and she assumed he was some kind of criminal trying to get his hands on her old man's illegal equipment. After some chaotic back-and-forth, Gintoki actually helped her destroy the machine to keep it out of the wrong hands. She tried thanking him with an air conditioner, but he was stubborn about just wanting that electric fan.
She became a useful contact for Gintoki during the Benizakura arc, feeding him information while he tracked down a supposedly missing sword.
Over time, their relationship developed into a pattern of weird exchanges. She took his broken VCR off his hands in exchange for a cursed Blu-ray player—one that allegedly contained a Blu-wraith trapped inside the disc. Not to be outdone, Gintoki later swapped the Blu-wraith's kotatsu for another cursed kotatsu from her shop. Fans often note that these strange transactions became kind of their thing.
