Lane served as a lieutenant in the EFSF, though he wasn't exactly the most experienced pilot they had on their hands. The brass assigned him to the RX-104FF Penelope, a mobile suit that probably deserved better—or at least a steadier hand at the controls. Between his lack of experience and what seemed like genuine mental instability, Lane struggled badly against Mafty, racking up losses pretty consistently.
Things came to a head in the final battle over Adelaide, where Lane actually proved useful for once. He managed to lure Hathaway's Ξ Gundam into a series of beam barrier traps that successfully caught the mobile suit. It was his one real moment of tactical success, even if it came late in the game.
