Isuzu Yamada Asaemon was an unranked member of the Yamada clan—not exactly top tier. When the shogun got tired of waiting for the first team to bring back the Elixir of Life, Isuzu and a guy named Kiyomaru got tapped to join Shugen and Jikka as part of a second expedition to the island. Their actual orders were pretty brutal: eliminate the original team, wipe out everyone else on the island, and keep the Yamada Asaemons who were there to monitor everything safe. Shugen made sure that last part was clear.
