Tae runs the Akabeko, a beef hot pot restaurant specializing in gyunabe and sukiyaki. She's around 20 years old and manages the place with the kind of no-nonsense attitude you'd expect from someone keeping a business afloat in that era. Her twin sister Sae does similar work running the Shirobeko, another hot pot restaurant over in Kyoto.
Sanosuke's got a debt hanging over his head to Tae that's gotten pretty substantial once you factor in the interest—something he's never quite managed to settle. In the anime especially, Tae takes it upon herself to play matchmaker for Kenshin and Kaoru, convinced their relationship needed a push in the right direction. She's less of a background character than she might first appear and more of a grounding presence who cares about the people around her, even when they're not always easy to deal with.
