Beckman is a imposing figure—well over a foot taller than Shanks—with a sharp, no-nonsense personality that sets him apart from the rest of the Red Hair Pirates' crew. Twelve years ago he had jet black hair tied back in a ponytail, but it's since gone gray and he keeps it short now. He's rarely seen without a cigarette and his rifle close at hand, and he's picked up a distinctive X-shaped scar on his left temple.
Among Shanks's crew, Beckman comes across as the most level-headed and composed, the straight man to everyone else's antics. He, Yasopp, and Lucky Roo are Shanks's inner circle—the ones who show up whenever the Red Hair Pirates make an appearance, especially during important moments.
Creator Eiichiro Oda has stated that Beckman has the highest IQ of any character introduced in the East Blue saga, which tracks given his role as first mate to a Yonko. He presumably packs serious strength to match that position, though it's hard to pin down exact feats. At Marineford, Admiral Kizaru notably refused to engage him despite having just fought Whitebeard and his top commander. That said, Kizaru didn't hesitate to keep attacking Luffy once Beckman joined the fight.
