Kirie Goshima is a high school student living in the small town of Kurouzu-cho when she first notices something deeply wrong with her best friend Shuichi's father. He's become completely absorbed with spiral patterns—staring at them obsessively while neglecting everything and everyone around him. Things escalate drastically when he kills himself inside a washing machine, and his cremated remains literally scatter across the town as a massive cloud of ash. It's the kind of horrifying turning point that sets everything else in motion.
From there, the obsession spreads like a contagion. Kirie watches helplessly as her own father and then others in town fall under the same compulsion, fixating on spirals with an intensity that seems almost supernatural. But the real horror isn't just the psychological breakdown—people throughout Kurouzu-cho begin physically transforming, their bodies warping and mutating into grotesque spiral-like creatures. What starts as a personal tragedy becomes a town-wide nightmare with no clear way to stop it.
