Kanako became Genshiken's fourth president after moving to Japan—she'd grown up in the US since third grade and went to an American high school before joining the club at the start of fall semester. She's generally quiet and gets flustered easily, but that all changes when cosplay comes up. She's completely unashamed about it and became something of a fixture at school events, especially once she started dating Tanaka, who made her costumes. Her look helped draw attention too.
Her real passion, though, is yaoi featuring buff, middle-aged bald men—the kind of specific fetish that made Genshiken one of the few places that would have her back. Saki was the first to know about it and they became close because of that understanding.
Kanako's got some surprisingly firm opinions about cosplay ethics. She's against using it for sex work, claiming it disrespects the characters, but she got really embarrassed when someone pointed out the loophole of cosplaying as actual porn characters—and her reaction made it pretty clear she'd already gone there. When Saki suggested she could rebrand the club as a cosplay-focused group, Kanako saw her shot at the presidency and took it. She eventually handed things off to Ogiue.
In the manga relaunch, she's notably not job hunting. Instead, she's waiting for Tanaka to finish his schooling, which hints she might be planning to settle down as a housewife or support his career.
