Meanwhile, his girlfriend Saki is facing her own problem—her boyfriend Kousaka is a total anime fanboy, and she's desperately hoping to turn him into a normal person. Things don't go her way. Both Kanji and Kousaka end up joining Genshiken, the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, leaving Saki to tag along despite her reservations. As she follows Kousaka through the club's various activities—cosplay, anime conventions, video games, figure collecting—she finds herself learning way more about Japanese fan culture than she ever wanted to know. And surprisingly, she's starting to understand the appeal.
