Genshiken
Kanji Sasahara is a shy college freshman searching for where he belongs. He stumbles onto Genshiken—the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture—a club dedicated to all things otaku. His first meeting goes badly when senior Harunobu Madarame embarrasses him, sending Sasahara running and deep into denial about his own otaku interests. Things change when he befriends Makoto Kousaka, a club member who looks completely normal but is actually obsessed with anime and manga. Through Kousaka, Sasahara gets pulled into club life: watching anime, reading doujinshi, hitting conventions, the whole deal. He also meets Saki Kasukabe, Kousaka's girlfriend, who's horrified by otaku culture and determined to turn her boyfriend into a regular person. As Saki struggles against the tide of her boyfriend's fandom, Sasahara gradually stops fighting his own otaku nature. He settles into Genshiken and embraces the lifestyle he once denied, finally finding his place among people like him.
