Shinra is an underground doctor who lives with Celty, his girlfriend. He's the type to stay indoors most of the time, rarely taking off his white doctor's coat even when he's not working. His main obsessions are dissecting things, video games, and Celty—basically everything about her. He's into proverbs and idioms, especially ones about love, and he really can't stand abstinence.
He went to the same primary school as Shizuo and Izaya, and he finds both of them genuinely fascinating. He gets a kick out of watching them fight, though he knows where to draw the line. His father was also a doctor, and Shinra basically grew up in surgery rooms. The most memorable procedure? An autopsy on Celty when they first met—which is, obviously, how they ended up together.
As a doctor, Shinra has this habit of being weirdly interested in what he calls "interesting phenomena." That means Shizuo's inexplicable superhuman strength when he's angry, Celty's healing abilities, the fact that she doesn't have a head, how she even functions biologically—you get the idea. It's a little obsessive, but it comes from a genuine place.
One thing that surprises Celty is that Shinra somehow just knows what she's feeling, even without a head to read. It's uncanny and she's never quite figured out how he does it.
