The DigiDestined first run into him after their showdown with Devimon, and he's been helping them navigate ever since. He claims to be made of data, but insists he's fundamentally different from actual Digimon—whatever that means exactly.
What's weird about Gennai is how his appearance keeps shifting. When the kids first meet him, he looks like a really old man. But when Kari gets hit with a burst of light-based power and sees flashbacks to the Digital World's origins, suddenly Gennai shows up looking way younger, dressed in this hooded robe that honestly gives off major Jedi vibes. Turns out he's part of a whole group of beings like him, all working behind the scenes.
Gennai's crew is basically responsible for the entire foundation of the DigiDestined's operation. They're the ones who created the Digivices, the Tags, and the Crests. They also hand-picked which Digimon would become the Chosen Digimon in the first place. So yeah, basically everything the kids rely on? Gennai and his people made it happen.
