Honda's basically Yugi's right-hand man, though it didn't start out that way. He and Jonouchi were running around as street thugs when Yugi saved them both from a bully named Ushio—not that Honda thanked him for it at first. Eventually he came around, and the two became genuinely close friends.
Early on, Honda was hung up on Miho Nosaka. After he finally worked up the nerve to confess to Jonouchi, he got convinced into asking Yugi to help him write a love letter disguised as a puzzle. The plan fell apart when their uptight teacher Ms. Chono confiscated it and threatened to punish Miho unless the secret admirer came clean. Yugi and Jonouchi took the fall for him, which meant a lot. Yugi's darker side turned the whole thing into a Shadow Game and wrecked Ms. Chono's face as punishment. After that, Honda realized Yugi was genuinely good people, and they've been tight ever since—even though Miho shot him down when he asked her out for real.
The anime versions played things differently. The 1998 version kept the Miho subplot but ditched the Ms. Chono stuff. Once Duel Monsters rolled around, they pivoted to giving Honda a crush on Jonouchi's sister Shizuka instead, dropping Miho entirely. The English dub toned down his more violent past and softened his character overall, plus threw in a rivalry with Ryuji Otogi over Shizuka's attention.
No matter which version, though, Honda's the type who shows up when his friends need him. He's loyal like that.
