Lunamaria Hawke is a ZAFT mobile suit pilot aboard the Minerva, best known for piloting a customized red ZAKU Warrior. She trained at the ZAFT military academy alongside her sister Meyrin, Shinn Asuka, Rey Za Burrel, and several others—the whole group eventually ended up stationed together on the Minerva.
She gets pulled into the action during the Armory One Incident when stolen mobile suits slip away on a cloaked Earth Alliance ship. The Minerva chases after it, and that's where things get complicated for Lunamaria. She meets Athrun Zala, who's been lying low under an alias while protecting Cagalli. When Athrun rejoins ZAFT and boards the Minerva, Lunamaria develops feelings for him, though her attempts to get closer don't always work out—partly because Meer Campbell, a Lacus Clyne imposter, keeps getting in the way. Fans often note the irony that Lunamaria stays oblivious to her own sister's obvious crush on Athrun.
Captain Talia Gladys eventually orders Lunamaria to spy on Athrun during a meeting with his old friends from the Archangel. That's when Lunamaria pieces together that the Lacus working for PLANT is a fake. She reports to Talia but conveniently leaves out that detail, and she clearly struggles with whether to tell Shinn about it.
During the Second Bloody Valentine War, Lunamaria takes a beating at the Battle of Crete but recovers in time to take over piloting the Impulse when Shinn moves to the Destiny. Things fall apart for her emotionally when she learns Meyrin and Athrun have defected together—and that Shinn destroyed their escape mobile suit. Even though Shinn's clearly devastated, Lunamaria blames Logos instead of him, and the two find comfort in each other. They start a relationship.
Later, after discovering Meyrin is alive on the Archangel, Lunamaria becomes bitter toward Athrun for supposedly stealing her sister away. At the Battle of Messiah, Athrun badly damages her Impulse, but Shinn jumps in to help—entering SEED Mode and attacking with his Destiny. Lunamaria throws herself between them to stop the fight. Athrun enters SEED Mode too, blocks Shinn's attack and saves her, then cripples Shinn's mobile suit. Both pilots end up stranded on the Moon together, watching the Requiem weapon explode and the ZAFT fortress Messiah crash down.
In the "Final Plus" epilogue, Athrun rescues them both. By the end, Lunamaria is present as Shinn pays his respects at a memorial in Orb, standing alongside Athrun, Meyrin, Kira, and Lacus.
