Misao is a skilled ninja from the Oniwabanshū, an underground spy organization that operated out of Edo. She fights with kunai and is introduced at around sixteen years old, though she has a youthful appearance that makes her seem younger than she actually is.
She's the granddaughter of a former Oniwabanshū leader. When she was eight, her guardian Shinomori Aoshi—the clan's last leader—along with Han'nya, Shikijō, Beshimi, and Hyottoko, left her in the care of Kashiwazaki Nenji, known as Okina. Misao grew close to Okina, but she never stopped idolizing Aoshi. Han'nya held a special place in her heart too; he was the one who raised her and taught her to fight.
When word reached her that Aoshi had surfaced in Tokyo, Misao set out to find him. This search led her to cross paths with Himura Kenshin on the road back to Kyoto.
