Joe's defined as a tragic loner who seems cursed to attract disaster. His whole life has been shaped by one tragedy: when he was eight, Gallactor killed both his parents, and he's spent years burning to get revenge. His father, Giuseppe Asakura, had climbed high in Gallactor's ranks before something went wrong—either he got tangled up in internal politics or his conscience finally won out and he tried to defect to the ISO. Nobody's entirely sure what pushed him to it. Either way, Giuseppe and Joe's mother Katarina were shot dead by a Devil Star assassin while waiting to meet Dr. Nambu. Joe nearly died in that same attack, but Nambu pulled him out and brought him into the Kagaku Ninjatai. For years afterward, Joe's memories of that night were fuzzy at best.
As a team member, Joe functions as Ken's natural opposite—where Ken thinks things through, Joe acts on instinct and rage; where Ken goes off the rails, Joe stays grounded and practical. He's a phenomenal marksman and the team's chief gunner, which tracks with his whole philosophy: shoot first, figure it out later. He's not heartless about it, though. He's also surprisingly handy when he needs to hotwire his way out of a jam. As for close combat, he's got serious skill with throwing weapons, particularly darts and knives. The feather shuriken are standard issue for the whole team, but Joe's basically made it his thing.
Cover occupation: Private race driver; competes in endurance rallies and stock car racing. Lives out of a small trailer that he tows from race to race.
