Gengar is a dark purple, bipedal Pokémon with a round body, red eyes, and that signature sinister grin. It's got pointed ears, spikes running down its back, and stubby little arms, legs, and tail—all with three digits each. Pretty instantly recognizable.
What makes Gengar famous is its shadowy abilities. It can hide perfectly in any shadow, turning invisible to almost anyone. The creepy part? Its body works like a heat sink, dropping the temperature of whatever's around it by about 5°C just by existing. Beyond stealth, Gengar can fly, become intangible, possess other Pokémon or people, create illusions, and apparently extend its tongue for meters if needed.
Personality-wise, Gengar lives up to its ghostly vibe—it's mischievous and loves messing with people. Its favorite prank is pretending to be someone's shadow, then acting completely erratic to freak them out. The scarier part is that it actually gets a kick out of terrifying its victims. That said, a Gengar treated well by its Trainer can be genuinely loyal.
You don't find them often in the wild since they're the result of a trade evolution from Haunter, but they show up in caves and dark places. They're way more active in cities and alleys at night—that's their real habitat.
Mega Gengar
When it Mega Evolves, Gengar gets wild. Part of its body sinks into the ground, its arms and tail stretch out, and a third eye—yellow and unblinking—appears on its forehead. This eye lets it see into other dimensions. The spikes multiply and sharpen, the ears grow long and tilt back, and its coloring shifts to a darker, reddish-purple.
Mega Gengar's whole personality warps. It becomes vicious and only cares about things if they're potential prey. It'll dimension-hop to set up attacks and has zero regard for loyalty—it might even curse its own Trainer. The dimensionality thing is its main advantage in combat.
Gigantamax Gengar
Gigantamax version is somehow even creepier. The Pokémon balloons in size with its body sinking into the ground, leaving just the head, arms, and tail visible. It shifts to light purple, gets white eyes with yellow sclera, and its mouth becomes this weird tunnel with a long purple tongue hanging out. Three red clouds hover above its head.
The nightmare fuel here is the mouth—legend says it doesn't actually lead anywhere in its body. Instead, it's supposedly a direct gateway to the afterlife, powered by cursed energy. When it traps someone near that mouth, they supposedly hear the voices of people they've lost calling to them. Not exactly a friendly ability.
Evolution
Gengar is the final evolution in its line, coming from Haunter (which itself evolves from Gastly).
