One of Teikoku's original players and Kidou's best friend, Sakuma stuck around when Kidou left for Raimon—but he didn't take it well. When Shin Teikoku formed with Fudou as captain, Sakuma was determined to make Raimon pay for stealing his friend. He even resorted to the dangerous Emperor Penguin shot despite Kidou's objections. After their match ended in a tie, Sakuma pushed himself so hard he collapsed and ended up hospitalized. Before leaving, though, he patched things up with Kidou and they promised to play together again.
Once recovered, Sakuma got recruited for the FFI and joined the rest of the team heading to the islands to represent Japan. He, Kidou, and Fudou were all thrown for a loop when they discovered Kageyama was there—their old coach had some explaining to do.
