Barakamon
Seishuu Handa's a prodigy when it comes to calligraphy—until his ego gets in the way. After a curator tears apart his award-winning work as boring and conventional, he throws a fit that pretty much nukes his career prospects. His father, also a master calligrapher and clearly done with his son's attitude, decides the best medicine is exile. Handa gets shipped off to the remote Goto Islands to think about what he's done. He's expecting a quiet retreat where he can focus on his art and lick his wounds in peace. Instead, he moves into a house that's basically been taken over by a gang of rowdy kids led by the irrepressible Naru Kotoishi, and they have no interest in leaving. To make matters worse, the whole village is fascinated by him—less out of respect for his talent and more because they think he's hilarious and weird. Cut off from everything he's used to, Handa gradually learns something he probably needed to hear all along. The villagers, the kids, and all his time away from the city end up teaching him more about calligraphy, himself, and life than he ever could've figured out back home.
