Children of the Whales
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau
The Mud Whale is a massive ship that drifts endlessly across an ocean of sand, carrying a society split into two groups: the Marked, who can use a supernatural ability called thymia but burn through their lives doing it, and the Unmarked, who can't access thymia but live normally and run things. Chakuro, a 14-year-old with hypergraphia, serves as the Mud Whale's archivist—his job is to document everything that happens on the ship and wherever else they explore. While investigating an uncharted island, Chakuro stumbles across a badly injured girl with complete amnesia. She attacks him on sight before collapsing, and he brings her back to the Mud Whale. Nobody knows what to make of her. She's the first outsider anyone's ever encountered, and something's clearly off—she shows almost no emotion and fights with a skill that suggests a completely different kind of life than anyone on the ship has lived. When Chakuro meets Lykos, as she's nicknamed, it sets off a chain of events that'll reveal the truth about what's really out there beyond the Mud Whale. Everything he thought he knew is about to change.
