Synopsis

Hanamichi Sakuragi is a loud, red-haired delinquent with impressive natural athleticism—and a romantic losing streak of 50 rejections. Starting his first year at Shohoku High, he's desperate to finally land a girlfriend. Problem is, his reputation precedes him, so most students keep their distance. By the end of day one, his feelings are clear: he hates basketball and he needs a girl. That changes when Haruko Akagi, unaware of his troublemaking past, notices how tall he is and casually asks if he likes basketball. Caught off guard by the fact that an actual girl is talking to him, Hanamichi panics and says yes—even though he absolutely doesn't. She drags him to the gym to test his skills, and asks if he can do a slam dunk. With zero experience but plenty of raw strength, he actually pulls it off—though he overshoots so badly he smashes his head into the backboard. Haruko's impressed by his crazy athleticism and immediately tells the basketball team captain about him. Suddenly Hanamichi's caught up in the world of competitive basketball, all chasing after a girl he barely knows. But as things unfold, he starts realizing there might actually be something worthwhile about the sport after all.
