Birth place: Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, Japan
Kenji Kamiyama is best known for directing Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, the acclaimed anime series that spawned a sequel (2nd GIG) and a TV movie (Solid State Society). He's spent much of his career at Production I.G, the studio where he developed into one of anime's most distinctive directors.
Before taking the director's chair, Kamiyama worked his way up through the ranks—he was a background artist on major films like Akira and Kiki's Delivery Service, then moved into more substantial roles as he joined Team Oshii at Production I.G. He contributed the screenplay for Blood: The Last Vampire and served as animation director on Jin-Roh, establishing himself as a thoughtful craftsman with an eye for detail.
His directorial debut came in 2002 with MiniPato, but it was Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex that really defined his career. He spent nearly six years working in that world before moving on to direct Guardian of the Sacred Spirit and Eden of the East in 2007. Across these projects—whether Jin-Roh, Patlabor, or the Stand Alone Complex saga—Kamiyama has consistently worked with Production I.G, building a filmography marked by intelligent storytelling and visual sophistication.
