Ryouji Minagawa is a Japanese manga artist from Sumida, Tokyo, best known for his work on the action series Spriggan alongside writer Hiroshi Takashige. That collaboration earned him international recognition across North America and Europe, even landing him and Takashige guest spots at a Portuguese comic convention in 1996.
His manga career took off with his 1988 debut HEAVEN, but Spriggan—a five-year run from 1991 to 1996 spanning eleven volumes—made his name. After that, he shifted gears with Kyo and then ARMS, a collaboration with Kyoichi Nanatsuki that ran from 1997 to 2002 and netted him the 44th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shounen category in 1999. He followed up with D-Live!! in 2003, along with various shorter projects compiled in Tensousha: Minagawa Ryouji Tanpenshuu. His more recent completed works include Peace Maker, Adamas, and Kaiou Dante, plus contributions to the Neo Kiseijuu collection with other manga creators.
Minagawa has cited blockbuster filmmakers—George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg—as the inspiration behind his decision to become a manga artist.
Beyond manga, he's worked regularly as a character designer in video games. He contributed character designs to the JRPG Live-A-Live in 1994, the fighting games Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle and its sequel Critical Blow in 1996 and 1997 respectively, and the third-person shooter 10,000 Bullets in 2005. More recently, he's done character model work for multiple Tekken titles including Tekken 5, Tekken 6, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
