Shinn is the protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, and his entire arc is built on rage and grief.
He grew up in Orb, a neutral nation, with his parents and younger sister Mayu until the Earth Alliance attacked on June 15. The attack caught his family in crossfire between two mobile suits—either the Calamity or the Freedom, depending on who you believe—and killed them all. Shinn was the sole survivor. Rather than blame the soldiers who were actually fighting, he fixated on the Athhas, Orb's ruling family, convinced they should've just surrendered instead of putting civilians at risk. That bitterness never really left him.
After the attack, an Orb captain named Todaka took him in and arranged for him to join ZAFT in the PLANTs. Shinn threw himself into military training and graduated near the top of his class as a "ZAFT Red"—basically their elite tier.
Out of the academy, he was assigned to pilot the Impulse Gundam and stationed aboard the Minerva under Captain Talia Gladys. He served alongside classmates like Rey Za Burrel, Lunamaria Hawke, and her sister Meyrin. Even with time passing, Shinn never moved on from what happened. He carried Mayu's cell phone on him and was haunted by flashbacks of that day—the explosion, the death, and the better memories too.
