Yusei's the kind of guy who gets teased about his weight—Chihaya's fond of calling him "Porky"—but there's more to him than that. He used to be a serious karuta player back in elementary school, talented enough to face off against Chihaya, Arata, and Taichi. That all changed after he lost to Arata though. Instead of sticking with it, he bailed on karuta entirely and switched to tennis, which felt like safer ground.
Chihaya wouldn't let him stay away though. She reminded him why he'd loved the game in the first place—for fun, not just to win—and eventually convinced him to rejoin the karuta club. Now he's back at it as a member of the Suihoku Society at A Class level. When he's not playing, you'll find him visiting convenience stores across town, hunting down the best meat buns. It's become something of an obsession, though honestly, given his favorite foods are meat buns and yakisoba bread, the hobby makes perfect sense.
