Bondrewd is a legendary white whistle delver best known for his groundbreaking discoveries about the Abyss—and for the deeply unethical methods he used to make them. He's a researcher obsessed with understanding the Abyss who has repeatedly crossed moral and legal lines, trafficking artifacts, synthesizing dangerous drugs, and experimenting on living humans. Paradoxically, despite his cruelty, he genuinely cared for the subjects he brutalized.
His approach violated every principle that guides delver conduct, but his results were so significant that he largely operated with impunity. Ten years before the main events of the story, he did something previously thought impossible: he constructed the Idofront, a massive research facility deep in the Abyss's 5th Layer, and opened a route to the 6th Layer—a feat that should have been unreachable.
Much of his work centered on understanding the Curse of the Abyss. He lured children interested in exploring the Abyss's mysteries to his facility without explicitly telling them they'd become test subjects. Two of these children were Nanachi and Mitty. As his experiments intensified, the number of test subjects dwindled, until only those two remained. In what became his final experiment, Bondrewd tested on both of them simultaneously. The result was catastrophic: Mitty was struck by the Curse of the Abyss while Nanachi received the Blessing instead.
